08 Mar Karabo Mokgonyana, African Youth Ambassador for Peace
Meet Karabo Mokgonyana.
Karabo is a young South African woman who has committed her career to advance social justice and socio-economic freedom through advocacy and campaigning, groundwork, research, advisory and high-level project coordination. She is a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws graduate from the University of Witwatersrand and currently a Masters in International Law student with the same institution. In her law career, she is a Candidate Attorney.
She is the African Youth Ambassador for Peace for the African Union. Karabo has worked with organizations like UNESCO, the Mandela Institute for December Studies, the British Council, CIVICUS and Transparency International in social development work. She is a Youth Advisory Panelist for UNFPA South Africa and is an African Youth Ambassador for Peace with the African Union. She contributed to the development of the UN Security Council’s The Missing Peace: Independent Progress Study report on Youth, Peace and Security and has spoken before some of the world’s renowned leaders representing youth, womxn and African voices.
Karabo also steers gender equity with Sesi Fellowship and Skill Hub as a Program Director through programming aimed at empowering adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Karabo and her team have led successful national projects to empower AGYW in South Africa under The Global Fund’s grant program of Her Voice Fund. Karabo recently joined the 12 powerful young people as a Youth Power Panel to drive active youth participation in driving the SDGs. In recognition of her work, she has been named one of 25 Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Next Generation Women Voices in Africa and a Mail and Guardian Top 200 young South Africans.
